Requirements
- •Track record of staff-level architectural ownership across multiple systems or teams
- •Strong systems thinking with ability to reason about invariants, failure modes, and trade-offs
- •Experience designing highly configurable, adaptable systems at scale
- •Depth in distributed systems concepts such as asynchronous processing, idempotency, state machines, queues, consistency, and resilience
- •Experience with data architecture at scale including persistence, performance, isolation, migrations, and operational reliability
- •Strong TypeScript and Node.js backend development experience beyond CRUD applications
- •Cross-team technical leadership through communication, RFCs, design reviews, and mentorship
- •Platform enablement mindset focused on clear contracts, abstractions, and developer experience

What You'll Do
- •Shape and evolve the core platform architecture that powers n8n
- •Create scalable, configurable foundations across execution, infrastructure, and frontend platform
- •Drive architecture across the two Core Platform teams ensuring coherent system evolution
- •Design highly adaptable backend foundations supporting multiple workloads and deployment models
- •Partner with frontend platform workstream on core canvas architecture and platform primitives
- •Evolve core subsystems including workflow execution, orchestration, queue and task distribution, worker management, scheduling, and scaling
- •Design for correctness and resilience in distributed environments
- •Shape data and persistence architecture including database scaling, sharding, migration strategies, and operational maintainability
- •Lead technical decisions through proposals and RFCs, aligning engineers and stakeholders
- •Define stable platform interfaces and abstractions to reduce coupling and support safe migrations
- •Mentor engineers through design reviews, pairing, and technical guidance
Nice to Have
- •Experience with workflow engines, orchestration platforms, developer tools, or infrastructure-heavy SaaS products
- •Experience with architecture-heavy frontend systems such as canvas applications, plugin systems, real-time applications, or complex rendering environments
- •Experience with durable execution patterns like event sourcing, sagas, or state-management patterns
- •Experience designing multi-tenant architectures with tenant isolation and resource management
- •Open-source software contribution or maintenance experience
- •Experience operating large-scale SaaS systems with reliability and architectural impact
- •Experience decomposing monolithic systems or leading incremental architectural migrations
- •Experience designing products for both managed cloud and self-hosted environments
- •Observability mindset including instrumentation, debugging, incident response, and operability
- •Strong computer science grounding in distributed systems, consistency models, consensus, or formal methods
